Denmark's foreign policy is presently at an important crossroad. A new Europe is emerging, a new international security order is in the making, and at the same time Danish foreign policy is undergoing important change. During the last decade Denmark has become less »foot-dragging« in European integration,...
even though crucial opposition to full participation still exists; Denmark has become in-creasingly active in taking on UN and NATO tasks; and, not least, Denmark has developed an active, even activist, policy towards the baltic region. Danish third-world policy is also being debated: Which principles should guide development aid in the future, and to what extent should conditions be imposed on recipient countries?
In this indeterminate international and domestic situation it may be advisable to look back and make a preliminary status in order to reflect on the experiences Danes may build on in the future and the international possibilities they have.
Adaptation & Activism offers for the first time a comprehensive analysis of the main features of Denmark's foreign policy in the last quarter of a century, i.e. since 1967. Ten Danish specialists treat various aspects of Danish foreign policy and relate them to international and domestic developments.
Adaptation & Activism is written for an international audience of scholars, jour- nalists and other readers interested in Danish foreign policy. The book fills a major gap in the English-language literature on the subject and is an important contribution to the study of the causes of the foreign policy change in the new Europe.
As indicated by the title it is a central perspective of the book to explore the degree and character of Denmark's adaptation to her international enviroment, to measure the degree of her external dependence. But another, equally important, perspective is to describe and explain the increasing international activism characteristic of Danish foreign policy since the late 1980's. Finally the book takes op the manifold political dilemmas which may result from the new constellations in the international enviroment in combination with the new activism in Danish foreign policy. Will the government be able to control and handle these dilemmas, and - just as importantly - will the public respond to them in a constructive manner?
