Even then many of the tombs were in a poor state of preservation and several are now completely destroyed.

The old copies are still of great importance because they render the paintings in a better condition than the present.
The task of copying lasted from 1885 to 1913 and resulted in 90 facsimiles in 1:1 painted on canvas and a series of small water-colour fair copies which show the entire tombs comprising walls, ceiling, and plan.
All are reproduced in colour in the book.
