This digital music book contains a number of musical sketches in Classical style. When I wrote the music in the 1980-ies, they were not meant as sketches, though. Most of the pieces were written on request of soloists or for special occasions. And at the time of composing the music, I considered each...
piece - as all artists in love with their new babies do - a true work of art. But in the end most of the artworks turned out to be more work than art, and in the early 1990-ies, all of the pieces, except for Vallarelåt , was excluded from my official works list. 10 years passed, filled with musical theatre and no more classical music, besides the occasional symphony orchestra arrangements in my musicals.
But the years went by and to my surprise some of the odd little pieces in semi-modernistic style back in the early 80-ies seemed to have a life of their own. My violin solo The Moon was played in Peru and Spain and Davids 8. salme written for Arne Elkrog (first tenor of the Danish Radio Choir) was performed frequently through the 1990-ies. It warmed my heart, but I didn't check the original notes, only vaguely remembering the music. I had left the pieces behind me.
In the summer of 2001, I was finishing the long process of transferring my early works into digital format. Only my medieval music theatre play A Mystery Play from 1977 and some of my Danish rock songs from the early 1970-ies were still in old-fashioned printed format. Then I suddenly came to think of my lost classical works from the 1980-ies. I took the old printed sheet music out of the archive and looked them through. Then I took a deep breath and decided to publish the best of the pieces in digital form. The pieces were not extinct - they lived.
I decided to call the collection Neo Classical Sketches to stress their style and size. The mixture of old classical forms with modernistic traits was typical of the 1970-ies and -80-style. In a sense, they were all sketches for things to come; mainly the choir work Morungen Lieder in1989, the opera The Burning Lands in 1993 and Frozen Positions in 1995. Without these field studies , I would not have been able to start composing in the ultimate format, the symphony orchestra,
The collection consists of works for various instruments, songs and a nice little impressionistic sketch Vallarelåt . The pieces may be used as classical guitar, piano or string exercises and the two organ pieces can be played in the church. The violin. cello and Piano trio, To Russia is a flamboyant show piece for high level musicians as the Dinitzen Trio, who originally ordered the piece back in 1983.
Hopefully, my sketches will be of some practical use for music students and musicians looking for solo works for their instrument, especially, flute, violin, trumpet and organ. So, best of luck to my newfound 1980-ies babies.
